1098-T FAQs

You will not be issued a Form 1098-T if you fall into one of the following categories:

  • You are in a Ph.D., MD-PhD, or Certificate program. Students in Ph.D. and MD-PhD program will not be issued a 1098-T since program funding covers all eligible charges. Students in non-credit certificate programs will also not be issued a 1098-T form.
  • Your expenses were fully covered. The amount paid for qualified tuition and related expenses in the calendar year is less than or equal to the total scholarships disbursed that year. Note related expenses do not include charges for room, board, insurance, health fees, or transportation.
  • There was no payment activity. If no qualified tuition or related expenses were paid during the tax year, a form will not be generated.

Each January, Weill Cornell Medical College issues Form 1098-T to eligible students who paid qualified tuition and related educational expenses during the previous calendar year.

Please note that this form is strictly informational and does not constitute tax opinion or advice. Its purpose is to notify students of potential eligibility for federal income tax education credits; however, receiving a 1098-T does not guarantee eligibility for these credits. To determine the specific amounts paid for tuition and fees versus scholarships or grants received, taxpayers should rely on their own personal financial records.

Yes. Under Section 6050S of the Internal Revenue Code—enacted by the Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997—Weill Cornell Medicine is required to file information returns. These returns assist both taxpayers and the IRS in determining eligibility for federal education tax credits, such as the American Opportunity (formerly Hope) and Lifetime Learning credits.

There are two tax credits available to offset the costs of higher education by reducing the amount of your income tax: American Opportunity Credit and the Lifetime Learning Credit.
The requirements for using these credits vary. The determination of your eligibility to use the credits and to what extent they may be used is based on your citizenship, filing status, and level of income, among other factors.

If you did not receive your 1098-T due to a change of address, or you misplaced the form, we can provide you with a copy if you email us at student-accounting@med.cornell.edu with subject “1098-T Form Request."
