Waiving & Cancelling

Domestic Students

All domestic students (U.S. citizens, naturalized U.S. citizens, permanent residents, refugees, or asylees) who have comparable health insurance coverage through a non-WCM plan may request a waiver of the Student Health Plan (SHP) by the annual waiver deadline of June 30.

New students must submit a waiver by the end of the month prior to their start date. Waiver period details are sent each year in May to students’ WCM email accounts.

International Students

International students are non-U.S. citizens who hold an F-1 or H-1 visa and/or are classified in the Student Information System as a nonresident alien or unknown.

International students on an F-1 visa are required to enroll in the WCM-provided health insurance plan and are not eligible to waive coverage; enrollment is automatic.

Limited exceptions may be granted to F-1 students who are covered by a U.S.-based employer-sponsored, government, or group health plan that meets the University’s comparable coverage requirements.

Currently, the only students eligible to submit a waiver request are those approved for full time CPT credits in the PHS program for the summer term (review program & reg).

Request a SHP waiver

To access the SHP waiver request, visit Gallagher Student Health.

If your waiver is approved, the SHP charge will be automatically removed from your student account within 10 business days of the approval date.

Students who meet the waiver eligibility requirements but miss the waiver deadline may still cancel their insurance coverage. In this case, a $110 cancellation fee will apply, and the student is responsible for any monthly premiums incurred during the period of enrollment.

Note: There are no premium refunds for plans cancelled after April 30. And if applicable, dependents (spouse, partner, children) enrolled in SHP will have their plan coverage terminated effective when your plan coverage ends.
